John Gottman is the preeminent marriage researcher in America today. When I begin working with a couple, the Relationship Checkup is one of our important first steps. The Checkup is a set of online assessments taken by each spouse through separate confidential links. The results are sent to me, and give a comprehensive picture of each spouse’s experience in the relationship as well as important information about their emotional and relational history. Another first step is the Biblical Relationship Self-Assessment. People often come to counseling very aware of changes they want to see in their spouse, but much less aware of how they themselves are experienced by others in their family.

This document invites us into the self-examination Jesus calls for in Matthew 7:3-5. It’s pretty much straight scripture, so it will challenge us all. My hope is that it will do for you what it does for me—that is, stir up a hunger to grow, and to create homes that shelter, nurture, and strengthen our families to love and serve God and others. Please feel free to download and share it.

An invitation…

The assignment at the end of the first marital counseling session is for both spouses to spend the week meditating on Romans 12:10b (ESV): “Outdo one another in showing honor,” and seeking to put it into action.

What might it look like if you chose to answer this call in your home?
